2.9 Billion

In this month's issue of Real Simple magazine I found the above figure in "the simple list," a "monthly dose of useful tidbits, timely trivia, and catchy conversation starters," written by Sharon Tannenbaum.

Bet you can't guess what the figure represents?

It is, "the approximate number of pairs of shoes that American women have in their closets." I wonder how many shoes the average woman has in her closet?  It also brings to mind several other questions, how was this number arrived at? And who was the mastermind behind the figure?

All kidding aside. There is a very special reason for this particular tidbit in "the simple list". "In the spirit of Thanksgiving, consider contributing to Soles4Souls, a charity that distributes footwear to the more than 300 million children and 1.5 billion adults worldwide without shoes. Simply clear out gently worn footwear and drop it at a collection box near you (find one at Soles4Souls.org)."

It also brings to mind one of THE most famous shoe-a-holics -- Imelda Marcos who said, "I do not have 3,000 pairs of shoes, I have 1,060."

If you think I'm divulging the number in my closet, guess again!

Namaste
Chris

Thanks for raising awareness on behalf of this cause. I have so many irrational shoe choices in my closet...from younger days ;)
