Living in the House of Spirit

Years ago my sister-in-law, Judy, gave me a copy of Simple Abundance, A Daybook of Comfort and Joy by Sarah Ban Breathnach for Christmas one year. It wasn’t until a few years ago I unearthed it while cleaning out some books.

If you are unfamiliar with this book, it is a “book of 365 evocative essays – one for every day of your year – written for women who wish to live by their own lights.” Her down-to-earth, common sense suggestions are easy to implement and many times merely require a change in attitude or thinking to work.

Right now I’m on my second or third read and am usually behind in my daily readings. This morning I’m on the essay for May second entitled, Living in the House of Spirit where she talks about the late English writer, Rumer Godden, “whose secret to living an authentic life seems to have been dwelling, no matter where she actually kept house, in the House of the Spirit.”

Godden wrote, “There is an Indian proverb, or axiom that says that everyone is a house with four rooms, a physical, a mental, an emotional and a spiritual. Most of us tend to live in one room most of the time, but unless we go into every room every day, even if only to keep it aired, we are not a complete person.”

While I love the concept of four rooms, I especially agree with her admonition of, “unless we go into every room every day . . . we are not a complete person.”

So, what rooms have you been living in lately?

Namaste
Chris

I too love this book...I've been living mostly in the mental, emotional and spiritual and not nearly enough physical!! Still waiting for the weather to get warmer here to get out and enjoy spring...it may be summer before that happens!
