Napoleans

While out looking for photo ops on a beautiful afternoon last week, I found myself in Titusville, New Jersey, at Its Nutts and decided to stop in and treat myself to lunch.

Its Nutts is a tiny, but very popular, restaurant that can't be missed as you travel Route 29. It's been around for years  and in a former life looked like it was once a drive-in ice cream spot. The food is very good and the wait staff are friendly.

The minute you walk through the door, the first things you see are the desserts and their famous fried chicken, which I have yet to try. Of course, I spotted the Napoleans. Let's face it, life is short, you should always eat dessert first! Anyway, I couldn't remember the last time I had a really good Napolean and these screamed my name as I walked by to my seat.

They have breakfast, lunch and dinner specials and at the bottom of the lunch specials was another of my favorites -- Chicken Chipotle Quesadilla. The waitress appeared,  took my order and quickly vanished into the kitchen. Unfortunately, I was so hungry I forgot to take a photo of my quesadilla but I can say, without a doubt, it was excellent. Besides, the topic of this post is the Napolean.

According to the Fourth edition of the Food Lover's Companion, a Napolean is, "a delectable dessert made with crisp layers of puff pastry spread with creme patissiere (aka pastry cream) and either glazed with a thin icing or dusted with powdered sugar. Napoleans are usually made in small rectangular shapes just large enough for an individual serving."

Believe me when I say it did not disappoint; not that I thought it would. I could tell it had been made fresh because the pastry layers were light and crispy and the filling was creamy, rich but not too sweet. In a word, heavenly and I enjoyed every bite.

So the next time you're traveling Route 29 through Titusville, New Jersey, look for the Its Nutts sign and drop in. You will not be disappointed.

Namaste
Chris
