Years ago, I planted a hydrangea alongside our deck. It sat there doing nothing for years and years. In its defense, we have the worst soil for growing anything except huge weeds. It's clay and when it's very dry the ground is like concrete and when it rains it morphs into a swamp complete with mosquitoes.
In the last two years it has taken off and this year, has finally come into its own. I haven't a clue as to why it's taken so long to grow and produce lush blooms but this is its year! Floral-ly speaking, I guess it's true good things do come to those who wait.
Better to bloom late than not at all.

So very true. Lovely photos. I bet it's even better in person. Sigh.
